In 2003, Betty Grant, who was then 86 years old and had painted all her life, wanted to attend j’anna jacquelyn’s watercolour classes in Lunenburg but had no way of getting there. I offered to drive her there and pick her up after the lesson but she wouldn’t hear of putting me to the inconvenience. The solution was for me to take the class too! Thus began my journey in watercolour painting.

I found watercolour a medium that is both challenging and rewarding. As you will see from my paintings, my subject matter was varied. I joined a life-drawing group and that improved my accuracy and led me to experiment with painting directly without prior drawing.

I participated in “Paint Mahone Bay” each year in support of the Mahone Bay Settlers’ Museum. I am also a supporter of the Mahone Islands Conservation Association and my work has been included in their art auctions.

My paintings have been exhibited at the Cheesecake Gallery in Mahone Bay, the Saltspray Café in Mahone Bay, and at the Lunenburg Art Gallery.

Eventually, Betty had to give up painting but I continued to paint until 2008.

I was born in England and emigrated to Toronto, Ontario, in 1969. I retired in 1997 and moved to Oakland, adjacent to Mahone Bay, on the South Shore of Nova Scotia.
