The Saltspray Café

This is the old Saltspray Café at 621 Main Street, Mahone Bay. The café was on the ground floor with apartments above. Jacquie and I lived in the top apartment in 1997/8 while our house was being build in nearby Oakland.

A fire occurred at 5 a.m. on Monday, 27th August 2007. It started in, and was mostly confined to, the top apartment located in the roof space. This photo was taken at 6:40 a.m. with the fire brigade on the scene.

The roof and the top apartment were mostly destroyed. The apartment below it and the Saltspray Café on the ground floor escaped the flames but were extensively damaged by water and smoke. Luckily, no one was injured.

Five of my watercolour paintings were hanging in the restaurant at the time of the fire. Four have since been recovered. One had a little water damage to the backing and one had frame damage. Both were easily repaired. The other two paintings sustained no damage. The fate of the fifth painting is still unknown.

This is the Saltspray Café at its new location.
